I am honored to serve on the Brooklyn Park City Council, since my election in 2022, representing the East District. As a council, we have begun many important projects within Brooklyn Park to work towards our goal of continually building vibrant, safe, and thriving communities for all who call this area home.
-
In 2023, I led the effort to institute a development moratorium to adjust our zoning by prioritizing higher per-acre taxable value for development. This effort will allow a future shift in the tax burden from individual homeowners to commercial property owners.
-
The council instituted prevailing wage requirements for any project involving city dollars. This ensures that all projects receiving city dollars provide a living wage and benefits to the workers involved in the project.
-
The council authorized a shift in city funding to expand Zanewood Youth Center. Zanewood is a vital resource for enriching the lives of Brooklyn Park youth.
-
The council is working to expand the number of municipally-owned basketball courts which are in high demand for city and local non-profit programs.
-
We have begun development of the new Central Fire Station. This project will improve living conditions for our full time firefighters, and expand capacity to conduct emergency operations and training for cities in the northwest suburbs. The new station will also include state-of-the-art systems that protect staff from known pollutants and carcinogens.
-
We approved funding for the adoption of advanced technology in the Police Department. This tech will leverage AI and other technologies to improve safety, enhance officer accountability and oversight, and streamline manual processes, enabling our officers to spend more time working in the community.
-
The city has signed contracts with development partners to begin work on the Brooklyn Park Biotech District, which will bring quality jobs, housing, and amenities to Brooklyn Park, further reducing the tax burden on our residents.
-
I have served as the council liason for various city commissions, including the Human Rights Commission, Citizen's Long Range Improvement Commission (CLIC).
-
I have represented the city as a board member of Brooklyn Bridge Alliance for Youth and the Brooklyn Park Development Corporation.
Before serving on city council I was involved in the community in a variety of other ways.
-
Served for 6 years on the Brooklyn Park Human Rights Commission, where I was elected chair for 3 years. Key accomplishments include:
- Stabilizing membership of the commission
-
Developed a plan to make the 63rd and Zane area safer
-
Partnered with The Village BP and community groups to support the residents of Huntington Place and other apartment complexes in correcting serious issues with the standards of housing.
-
Served on the Police Department Scorecard Taskforce and Study Partner Selection Committee. The committee selected a research firm to analyze the police department around recognized police reform best practices. The taskforce then reviewed the firm's analysis with the police department to prioritize needed changes.
-
Served on hiring committees for several key staff members including the Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion manager, and Human Resources director.
-
Served on the Fire Department Strategic Planning Taskforce. This group reviewed data and planning to support the continuing transition of BPFD from paid on-call to a full-time professional department.
